Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is one of the most famous figures in Chinese mythology and the central mythological hero of Journey to the West.
According to mythology, Wukong is born from stone atop the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. Unlike rulers or celestial beings born into hierarchy, he emerges independently from nature itself.
After discovering mortality and fearing death, Wukong begins searching for immortality and supernatural knowledge. He studies under immortal masters, learns transformation, acquires magical abilities, and becomes extraordinarily powerful.
One of his most famous weapons is the Ruyi Jingu Bang, a magical staff capable of changing size and overwhelming enemies through immense force.
Wukong eventually rebels against Heaven after feeling disrespected and humiliated by the Heavenly Court. His rebellion becomes one of the most important conflicts in Chinese mythology because it symbolizes tension between freedom and authority.
Despite defeating celestial armies and challenging divine order, Wukong is eventually subdued by the Buddha and imprisoned beneath a mountain.
Later, he joins the pilgrimage of Tang Sanzang in Journey to the West. During this journey, Wukong gradually transforms from an uncontrolled rebel into a disciplined protector.
Sun Wukong remains culturally influential because he represents multiple ideas simultaneously: rebellion, freedom, ego, transformation, courage, and spiritual growth.
His mythology continues to influence literature, games, films, anime, and mythology discussions across the world.
